The Art of Islamic Pattern                                                              Advanced Course

This an opportunity for students, who already have some experience of constructing geometric and arabesque patterns, to gain a deeper understanding of the principles underlying a range of designs found across the Islamic world.

Students will learn how to work creatively with these principles in order to generate original
designs. A wider range of geometric designs (including more complex rosettes) will be
introduced and students will explore a broader selection of underlying tilings.

New biomorphic motifs and styles will be taught alongside more advanced
compositions. Students will also learn how to construct an illuminated page design
and learn in more depth painting and gilding techniques which will result in
finished pieces.

New skills will be introduced and there will be a period of practical application using
designs produced in the course.
